The officer’s face remained impassive, but Alex could see a small twinkle of amusement in his eyes. It seemed like the officer was about to say something when Alex’s phone buzzed on the dashboard.
“Oh no!” Alex exclaimed, looking at the screen. “That’s Rufus! He’s probably wondering where I am. I’ve really got to go.”
The officer took a deep breath, obviously trying not to laugh. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a pen, and began writing something on the back of Alex’s speeding ticket. Alex’s heart raced. Was he really getting off the hook?
Finally, the officer handed the ticket back to Alex with a stern look, but there was a slight grin tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Alright, kid,” he said. “I’m going to let you off with a warning today. But next time, try to be a little more careful. And tell Rufus I said happy birthday.”
