Ingredients
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 1/4 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
For the Filling:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
For the Sauce:
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
Optional Toppings:
- Sliced pepperoni
- Sliced mushrooms
- Sliced bell peppers
- Sliced black olives
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil. Mix until the dough comes together.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Prepare the Filling:
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook until the onion is softened, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Prepare the Sauce:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes (if using), and sugar. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Assemble the Pizza:
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Grease a 12-inch deep-dish pizza pan or cast-iron skillet with vegetable oil.
- Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a large circle, about 14 inches in diameter.
- Carefully place the dough into the prepared pan, pressing it into the bottom and up the sides.
- Layer the bottom of the dough with the shredded mozzarella cheese, spreading it evenly.
- Add the cooked sausage mixture on top of the cheese.
- Pour the tomato sauce over the sausage, spreading it evenly.
- Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese on top of the sauce.
- Add any additional toppings as desired.
- Bake:
- Bake the pizza in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
- Serve:
- Allow the pizza to cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve hot and enjoy!
Tips:
- Resting the Dough: Allowing the dough to rise properly ensures a soft and airy crust.
- Cheese First: Putting the cheese directly on the crust helps create a barrier that prevents the crust from becoming soggy.
- Preheating: Make sure your oven is fully preheated to ensure even baking.
